Thank you

Project Coordinator | Magdy Shiha
On our second day of the worshop with our teacher Miss Hood and our visiting guest artist Mr Magdi Shiha we worked with lights and sounds to create a mixed-media installation in a large space.
Firstly, Miss Hood and Magdi Shiha displayed a long sheet over the top of stacked chairs and tables as it lay draped over it and onto the ground. Beside it were chairs on both sides to create a bus kind of vehicle where we later then sat. They both also played some audio videos to create the hustle and bustle like that of the city streets of Cairo back in Magdi's hometown. Another element implemented was the effect of projecting video images onto the walls of the dark classroom giving us the feeling of teh atmosphere of Cairo.
Something new i had learnt in that second lesson with Magdi is that you can 'Paint with light' and it was amazing to watch it and observe this wonderful piece of art. When our teachers had finished their artpiece it was then our turn to have a go and try to create an artpiece using the materials we had such as, black light, white sheet, candles, celeophane, tables, chairs, the projector and the entire space of the classroom. For our first time it was pretty successful as we all played a part in implementing ideas into the artpiece. I really enjoyed making installation art and would liek to further experiment on this later on.
when we start our  art workshop  second time fast we  did paint on the cardboard  Magdi told us to do our own design. And it is very hard  because we don't have  enough time to think what i'm going to do my own  drawing on the cardboard.
we were working on monday the 29th and we did a few artwork, we painted on the card board we had no idea what we were painting but in the end it showed up really nice. Seeing Magdi painting on the card board was really intresting how he start painting something and he ended with something else.
ASSALAMULIKUM

On the second day of the work shop, we did paintings  on cardboards with Magi's instructions. We painted anything we had in our mind, which was really enjoying.

To be honest, Magdi was so fast with the art work he did. It was amazing to see him doing an artwok without having any idea of what he was going to do, yet the artwok he had done had several meanings after he finished it.

During today's class we started to experiment with paint and cardboard, using light and shadow. Following what Magdi showed, we tried to create our own artworks using our imagination.
Using cardboard, Magdi told and showed us how we could express ourselves through that certain type of art. How it could show two different sides of the same person.
That however was only one use of the cardboard and we were allowed to do whatever we wished with it, "to let loose" being my perspective.
That aside, what Magdi did was drawing African faces and gluing down onto the cardboard. Following that he tore bits and crumpling the pieces still attached to the paper back onto the cardboard. The others were pasted onto a different part.
To be honest, the one part I think I enjoyed the most (not that I didn't enjoy the others) was the splattering of paint onto the artwork because it kind of completed the look and of course because it was fun.
However what astounded me the most was Magdis skill with the charcoal when he was drawing. The work was completed so fast! Perhaps within 20 min or less.
Overall I am very pleased to say that I have enjoyed this workshop and am looking forward to the next one!

Not Just a Painting on the Wall...

In today's workshop we experimented with painting, but not in the way that many people might think. Magdy showed us artworks that he made which used canvas in unusual ways and also about how he used cardboard as a kind of 'canvas'.

This discussion reminded me of an art style called 'book page art' where art is crafted or painted on the pages of old books. Click here for a website with book page art.

He then led us through an artistic process starting with paper and charcoal then moving to primed cardboard and acrylic and finally displaying his work using the folds in the cardboard box. This project tied in the new media workshop we did last week and also is foreshadowing the sculpture work that we will do on Wednesday.

When he was finished and we were all staying around admiring the artwork, one of the students raised an important question.

"But miss... what is it?"

Mohammed Kenneh
Yeasmida
What a great question! However, I am not the only one with the answers. Sometimes an artist creates work with intended meaning and other times they are just playing and meaning can be considered after. When considering the meaning of this work we discussed what we could see (an eye, a mouth, 'busy' lines) and made some connections from there. What do you think it is?

Then, it was the students' turn. The artworks on this post were made within about 20-30 minutes.

I would love for these students to reflect on this workshop and perhaps they might enlighten us about some of the artistic choices they made when creating their work.

AIIC - our first week of workshops

This week the students had their first two workshops with Magdy.

Our first workshop session was an introduction to the 5 week program. Magdy showed the students how they will design their own CVs, then develop their concept, followed by resolution of that concept and finally a presentation of their work.
If students need to revise Monday's session, they should click here.
I really enjoyed seeing Magdy's own art projects because it made the student process seem very relevant to that of a professional artist. Also, my students were encouraged to think upon their individual backgrounds and cultures (which are very diverse!) and what stories they could share with others through their art.

Our second workshop was for research and experimentation using light and sound as art materials. The students learnt about 'painting with light' and about how to try out different ideas to test their effects. Magdy and I worked together to build an installation for the students to enter the room and see. Students were then invited to enter the artwork and become a part of it. Experimentation led to new meanings being created. Students then created an installation of their own and they all worked together wonderfully to create a piece using light and shadow. The footage from this workshop will be uploaded next week.

I would love my students to look at this website : https://www.nuformer.com/ for some amazing examples of projector mapping. (Once on the home page, click the right arrow twice so you are on the 'Video Mapping' page and play the video). Otherwise, just type 'projector mapping' on a YouTube search.

Also, these are some focus questions that my students can use when posting their blog items:
1. What did you learn that interested/amazed/surprised you?
2. What did you enjoy in the workshop?
3. What do you want to experiment with next using light and sound?

Some of my students will be participating in this series of workshops as part of their subject learning and assessment where they must choose a focus of either time, place or space. This artwork is my attempt at a first development under the focus of place. I wanted to create an artwork which shows my connection to Australia. When I lived to the west, it was a country lifestyle, in comparison to my experiences with Eastern Australia which became progressively city-orientated. I plan to perhaps incorporate digital imaging software in further developments of this artwork, but I think this is a good place to start.

Australian International Islamic College

The Australian International Islamic College (Durack campus) is one of the schools involved in this art project. A group of students (ranging from year 6-12) will be participating in art workshops led by the school's art teacher, Renee Hood (me!), and the project director, Magdy Shiha.

After meeting with Magdy, we decided that the best way to begin would be to practice creating collaborative art pieces through this blog. We thought this would be the best way for us to learn about each other as artists and also to get the students inspired by collaborative artworks before the workshops commence. So watch this space!

To find out more about our school, click here: www.aiic.qld.edu.au

Project Objective

Young people are the generation of our future. It is through influencing their understanding and perceptions that we have the capacity to mobilize a generation that has a new aspect and healthy appreciation and understanding of what multiculturalism should be.
The project will target young people from a wide range of cultures and religions. An artist who specialists in digital arts, graphics and visual art will be engaged who will run a series of workshops with young people that seek to document (through stories, drawings and interactive media), an understanding of their culture, how they came to live here, their dreams and hopes and personal stories.

The objectives of the project are to:
  • Document through art, stories and digital media (video, audio, digital photography), the personal stories and dreams and visions of our multicultural youth
  • Broaden the minds of young people to create an understanding and acceptance of different cultures and religions
  • Utilize electronic media to redesign, reshape and re-establish modern views and to promote integration of different cultures

Outcomes of the project will include:
  • An E-magazine, which is an interactive media for the ipad or computer. The magazine has illustrations, drawings, storytelling and content that is both educational and entertaining.
  • A digital video portraying different cultural groups working together in workshops to produce the products as a well as a visual portray of what multiculturalism means to this generation.
